Gareth is a third year university student who studies Acting, and also runs a theatre company called ‘Company of the Absurd’. This extract is from a play called ‘How Lovely’, scripts like this is what Gareth primarily writes. ‘How Lovely’ is one of the many scripts that Gareth is writing and working on currently. Gareth’s inspiration for script writing comes from the theatrical style of Absurdism, a style which negates all meaning in human existence, and preaches how a human being can only truly live if they stop looking for meaning.

How Lovely
DION - I’m left-handed
VASIR - Ah! A dying breed
DION - Hoping to be the last one.
TERA - Ugh somebody just die. Peel on over, kick the bin
VASIR - Living is just too good
HOTH - What is good anymore?
MORGAN - Nothing is bad or good
DION - Why so philosophical?
HOTH - Why so so so...
MORGAN - Me
HOTH - No why are you so you?
VASIR - So we
TERRA - So us
MORGAN - Let’s go
DION - Where?
MORGAN - Let’s just go somewhere, anywhere not here or there
VASIR - I’m comfy where I currently am thanks
MORGAN - Boring, very boring people you lot are.
HOTH - Not boring just normal
MORGAN - What’s normal about this?
DION - Nothing is normal anymore
VASIR - What are you reading?
TERA - The walls which are painted with the blood...
DION - The blood of what?
MORGAN - I really don’t like where this conversation is going!
HOTH - So let’s change the channel
MORGAN - Chzzzzzzz
VASIR - Oh can you hear that
TERA - Hear what?
VASIR - The presence of another man
TERA - Another what?
VASIR - Another being beyond this world
HOTH - Quiet! Let it say something...
Beat
MORGAN - Oh I heard that then
TERA - I didn’t
VASIR - Will you just be quiet and listen, just listen
Beat
MORGAN - The wind is speaking to us
DION - There is no wind
MORGAN - Exactly...
DION - Let’s change the channel again it’s scaring me!
HOTH - Just turn on the tv
DION - Effort though, I don’t wanna waste my energy
VASIR - We’re doing nothing then?
MORGAN - A lot of things happen when you do nothing
HOTH - Time is just slipping away at our fingers
TERA - What if we looked at the little things in life and just appreciate them. Why does it feel
like we are living in these snatched bodies? Look at me, just look at me for a second and
appreciate me and the little things I provide. It isn't the end of the world if you just look into my
soul through my eyes. Look at how lovely I am. How lovely I can be...
